The Importance of Grip Strength

The Importance of Grip Strength

Grip strength doesn't get the spotlight biceps or abs get, but it might be the most honest measure of how strong you actually are. It's one of the first things to fade as people age, and it's tied directly to whole-body strength, independence, and longevity — not some influencer statistic, an actual predictor of how long you'll be able to live life on your own terms. I don't train grip as an afterthought. I test it, I track it, and I build it on purpose, because carrying your own bags, hanging from a bar, and opening a jar at 80 shouldn't be a "someday" skill you hope you still have. But how you grip matters as much as that you grip: keep the load resting in the meaty pad of your palm, not pinched out at your fingertips. Your fingers have far less padding, and forcing them to carry too much resistance compresses the nerves running through them, which is exactly why you'll sometimes feel that tingling shoot up into your elbow. Strength you can't hold onto — and can't hold correctly — isn't strength you can use.

Stay strong and train for life!
